After doing some research on various topics, the one I chose, women and the military, stood out to me the most. I chose this topic because I am interested in the history of women and their everchanging role in our nation and specifically the armed forces. I feel like its a significant topic in American history as well as current events. Some much of our culture is shaped by our laws and beliefs and this topic has an impact on how women are viewed in our culture. Sometimes I wonder what it would feel like to be one of the first women to break down the barriers that held women back.
My research was made up of many steps and tasks. First, I researched for information on this topic and found there was an abundance of books on this topic. After reviewing several books, I chose to read The Marine Corps In Action. I then did some computer research and I realized that it was a bit challenging to find primary sources.Although they werent easy to find, I was able to collect 4 primary sources from websites and databases. My fifth source was unique, I was fortunate enough to be able to interview one of the first female Naval Commanders, Grace Mehl, USN (Ret.). In the end, after some hard research, I was able to find many sources such as images and documents from different time periods. I was able to find numerous secondary sources easily.
I chose to make a website because I have an interest in technology. I feel like this format is modern and translates across all generations. I created my project by using the website Weebly.com. I found it was easier than I had thought it would be to create my project; Weebly.com was simple to navigate and it was fun to use. I liked being able to use my creativity by designing the layout and inserting photos and links to help my viewer have a more interactive experience.
My National History Day project fits the theme conflict and compromise. Women and equality is a topic that has been agrued for generations and after all my research I believe this discussion is far from over. The conflict I chose to research relates to the topic of this year's National History day theme; should women be allowed to join the military and if they could, in what capacity should they be allowed to serve? After several wars and many different ruling and compromises a final decision was made. The compromise, to allow women to join the military without restriction has a significant impact on our nation and changes the way the people view it. which defined the role of women in the military. This compromise has a significant impact on our nation.
